Queen's IRC Staff Celebrating 85th Anniversary Year

85 Years of Lifelong Learning

Queen’s IRC celebrated our 85th anniversary on October 12, with an afternoon open house. Guests from the University and local community, as well as IRC participants, speakers, and staff celebrated at the Queen’s IRC office in Kingston.

Speeches from the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, Dr. Barbara Crow, and Queen’s IRC Director of Professional Programs, Alison Darling, highlighted new programs and projects on the horizon for the Centre, and showcased our achievements.

The event also provided the opportunity to reflect on our history and review some of the documents from our past. In many ways, we see how far our training – and the world in general – has come since 1937. We started in a time when industrial relations conferences and training was for “business men”, with men leading the training as well. In 2022, we find that at least half, and often more, of our participants (and facilitators) are women.

Director’s Note – February 2022

Welcome to a new year of learning! As Queen’s IRC’s new Director of Professional Programs, I’m delighted to introduce our 2022 Program Planner. It’s a privilege to join this team, and I look forward to getting to know you, our participants and sponsor organizations, throughout 2022. While we had hoped to resume in-person training here in Kingston and across Canada this winter, the ongoing pandemic means we’ll have to wait a bit longer. In the meantime, “Studio IRC” brings you virtually into our technology-enhanced classrooms, with amazing tools that our program team and expert facilitators are using to deliver immersive and interactive programs.

Remote Learning Options

Introduction of Virtual Seats

The current COVID-19 pandemic has interrupted our ability to offer training the way we normally do, with participants travelling from across the country to meet face-to-face and work together to build new skills. We know that you still have training needs, and we have been working hard to find ways to meet these needs in a way that keeps everyone safe, continues to deliver the premium training you expect from Queen’s IRC, and has options that work with provincial and organizational restrictions.

Queen’s IRC response to COVID-19

We hope that you and your colleagues are staying safe during this pandemic. We are grateful for the essential staff in our community who have been working on the front lines to keep us safe, fed and healthy during this time. Given the current Covid-19 situation, we have cancelled some programs and adjusted our fall 2020 program lineup.

Director’s Note – August 2019

It’s no secret that there are several social issues influencing today’s work environment, such as workplace wellness, equality, and the disruption of jobs through advances in automation. Today’s workers need more than technical abilities – they must have digital fluency, as well as social skills to collaborate effectively in a diverse environment. Queen’s IRC programs are designed to help you and your organization build a solid foundation for a positive work culture that supports continuous learning and growth, using practical, evidence-based and relevant training to address current challenges and opportunities.

Trending Topics on the IRC Website

A new and exciting year has begun, and I hope that you are off to a good start. As the Director, it is a good time for me to review what we did in 2018 and where we are going in 2019. One of the ways I do this is to take a look at the popular articles on our website, and review which topics people are engaging with the most to ensure that these trends are representative of the programming that we are offering. Last year we introduced a Workplace Restoration program, and I am pleased to see that three of the top four articles we released last year were about workplace restoration. This is clearly a hot topic that many organizations are dealing with right now.

Stephanie Noel, Queen's IRC Director

Director’s Note – January 2019

What Does Employee Engagement Mean to You? At the IRC, we believe that employee engagement begins with the commitment of strong leaders who believe in creating an organizational culture that fosters healthy relationships, encourages diversity of thought and maximizes opportunities for collaboration and multidisciplinary solutions. That vision flows through the many programs that you’ll find in our Spring 2019-Spring 2020 Program Planner. Leaders build great teams by combining the talents of many to achieve shared goals.

Director’s Note – Fall 2018

It’s a real pleasure, as the new director of Queen’s IRC, to introduce you to our fall 2018 – fall 2019 programming. I’ve been with the IRC for over fifteen years, and during that time, I’ve had exceptional opportunities to learn from and with colleagues, program participants and organizations across a broad range of industries. These relationships have been integral to the success of the Centre, and to my own professional growth. They are also the foundation of a progressive culture of community and wellbeing in our workplaces.
