Queen's IRC Director at Alberta HR Conference
The 6th annual Alberta HR Conference is taking place April 27th and 28th in Edmonton. Queen's IRC Director, Paul Juniper, has been invited to deliver three sessions at the HR conference. Paul will be speaking about Raising the Bar on HR, the Future of HR, and releasing some of the data from the IRC's recent HR survey.
In his exclusive executive briefing, Paul will challenge delegates to broaden their understanding of what the roles and responsibilities are for the HR profession. He will provide insights on the skills HR professionals must now have to perform their work, and how organizations, and their HR personnel in particular, must respond to the increasingly demanding fiscal and social environment that public and private sectors now face. In addition, Paul will relay how the expectations that CEOs have for the HR profession are evolving, and what these changing expectations mean for practitioners.
In his two-hour Future of HR session, Paul will discuss his perspectives on the HR profession. He will talk about the changing world of work, how HR practitioners are increasingly being called on to act as change agents, organizational learning facilitators, and strategic partners in shaping an organization's culture and overall effectiveness.
Then, in his third session, Paul will present some of the data from the IRC's 2011 survey, "An Inquiry into the State of HR in Canada."

Queen's IRC Advanced HR Programming

As an HR professional who has worked in the field for more than 30 years, I am well aware that a gap exists in the training, learning, and development opportunities available for my colleagues. Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) certification is structured to provide the skills and resources that are required for professionals who embarking on their management careers. However, few training programs are available for HR professionals with a CHRP designation, who have been in management roles for several years. Indeed, the HR practice demands an understanding of fundamental skills and knowledge, but these basic skills will not lead to promotion. HR professionals seeking to advance their career need an in-depth understanding of the business, in general.
Recognizing this critical learning gap, in 2010, I decided to launch an innovative program at the Queen's IRC, titled Advanced HR. Program participants receive a copy of HR Competencies: Mastery at the Intersection of People and Business by Ulrich, Brockbank, Johnson, Sandholtz, and Younger (2008). These authors identify HR competencies that are required for today's HR professionals. They outline six roles that HR professionals play: talent manager/organization designer; culture and change steward; strategy architect; operational executor; business ally; and, credible activist.
The IRC's Advanced HR program is designed for HR managers with three to five years of experience, who are CHRP certified, or have equivalent experience. Over the course of the three-day program, learners acquire the skills necessary to take on the roles identified by Ulrich et. al. Our unique program combines interactive learning activities, dialogue with colleagues, and diverse learning strategies, and culminates in an optional open-book exam that allows learners to test their comprehension of core Advanced HR knowledge.
