Accommodating Disability in the wake of Keays v. Honda Canada

Employers may be relieved now that the Supreme Court of Canada has reversed steep punitive damages in a high-profile wrongful dismissal case involving a disabled worker. But accommodating the needs of employees who have disabilities is not getting any easier, says IRC faculty member Anthony Griffin.

Dealing With the Disabled: Are HR Leaders Up to the Challenge?

Increasingly, human resources practitioners are being challenged to break down barriers to the participation of employees with disabilities. Those barriers, alas, are proving tough to overcome, says Rosemary Lysaght, Assistant Professor in Queen's School of Rehabilitation Therapy. One issue are skill gaps among workers with disabilities. A second issue, says Lysaght, are negative employer attitudes. “I don’t think HR people are really sold on the fact that people with disabilities can do a good job,” she says.

Visit Us at the HRPA Annual Conference

Queen's IRC will be out in force during the HRPA 2009 Conference and Trade Show, to be held at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre Jan. 28 to 30. IRC faculty will be well represented in the speaker roster. Allen Loyst, and Andy MacDonald are leading "Coaches Corner: How to Win the Bargaining Game" (Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 10:45 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.).

Gary Furlong discusses "Building Trust in an Adversarial World: Start at the Bargaining Table" (Thursday, Jan. 29 from 2:45 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.). If you are attending the Conference, do drop by the Queen's IRC trade show booth (number 803) and say hello.
