Beatty, Carol

Carol Beatty Carol Beatty was the director of the Industrial Relations Centre (IRC) at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, from 1996 to 2006 and concurrently an associate professor with Queen's School of Business.

An acknowledged expert on change management, Carol focuses her research on the areas of human and organizational issues resulting from the implementation of various types of change. She has recently completed a major study of the key success factors in the implementation of approximately 350 change initiatives and is currently completing case studies of successful change leaders in action. Previous research isolated the components of high-performance teams by studying over 180 functioning teams in Canadian organizations. Her writings have appeared in such prestigious journals as the Sloan Management Review, Human Relations, the California Management Review and the Business Quarterly. Her recent books include the Building Smart Teams (2004 with B. Barker); Employee Ownership: the New Source of Competitive Advantage (2001); and Facilitator Guide: Building High Performance Teams (1998 with B. Barker). Currently a senior research fellow of the IRC, she completed her MBA and PhD at the Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. She has taught in undergraduate and graduate programs in the Schools of Business, Industrial Relations and Policy Studies at Queen's University. She is an instructor on IRC programs in Change Management and Organizational Strategy, both open enrollment and custom programs.

Carol is also active as a consultant, and has facilitated change efforts in a number of private and public sector organizations. She has spoken to numerous groups in Canada and abroad, including provincial and federal governments, private industry, human resources associations and universities in both Canada and international venues. She has helped facilitate change efforts and team-based structures at numerous organizations, including Transcanada Corp., Cameco, the Ontario Public Service, Bell Canada, CADTH, the Assiniboine Credit Union, OMERS, Pfizer Canada, the RCMP, REALPac, Telesat Canada, AGF Management, Saskatchewan Government Executive, SDS Kerr Beavers, The City of Burlington, the Loyalty Group, the Alberta Newsprint Company, Barbados Light and Power, Dubai Aluminum, the Government of British Columbia, Bombardier Inc., the Canadian Council on Health Services Accreditation, the Canadian Nurses Association, Ciba Specialty Chemicals, and Correctional Services Canada. Canada. Carol is a trained facilitator in Future Search (Weisbord and Janoff) and Whole System Change (Dannemiller Tyson).

In addition, Carol has authored numerous complex multimedia business simulations used in high-level human resources education including: Panorama at the Crossroads, Change-O-Meter, and Harmon Health, which are featured prominently in IRC programs. Her belief is that acquiring knowledge should be fun as well as useful and she has devoted her career to incorporating adult learning principles and experiential techniques into her presentations and seminars.
